"Knights of Destruction" Reclaim and Recycle for Campus Spruce-Up

At Abintra we take seriously the practice of reducing, recycling, and reusing. A group of Abintra parents are taking this to a new level with a deck reclamation and other projects using recycled wood.

Led by Bob Locknar, the group calls itself The Knights of Destruction. Their first reclamation project resulted in a significant amount of wood near the Fleisher (aluminum) building. The wood will create an outdoor amphitheater for all to enjoy.

The volunteer hours donated toward this project are astounding. The amphitheater’s architect David Plummer (a former Abintra parent) says “Ideally, you always want to reclaim this kind of wood rather than sending it to the dump, but that never happens.”

Plummer is amazed at the results of this team of volunteers. It has been another very organic experience of the Abintra Parent Community.  For example, while Plummer completes the design for the amphitheater, the Knights have continued with other projects. These include using wood to frame the swing set play area behind the Fleisher Building.

The Knights also organized an Outdoor Parent Work Day (click here for photos) to spruce up the green areas in back of the campus, removing debris and honeysuckle. Following that project, the Knights built a wooden staircase leading from the concrete patio between the elementary buildings down to the playground. Next up: expending the playground area for Early Childhood classes.
